Which US States Need Locksmith License?

Nebraska and Tennessee repealed their locksmith licensing requirements in 2021. You no longer need a locksmith license in these states.

Effective August 28, 2021, County Clerk’s Offices in Nebraska no longer issue locksmith certificates. Registration requirements were repealed per LB169. In Tennessee, the licensing requirement for locksmiths was repealed with effect from May 27, 2021. The state of Tennessee no longer regulates the locksmith business.

Even in states that don’t have locksmith licensing requirements, most cities or counties require business licenses for commercial lockshops.
